Who We Support
At Music Therapy Birmingham, we offer personalised music therapy for children and young people who benefit from creative, non-verbal ways of expressing themselves. Our sessions support a wide range of needs and are tailored to each individual, creating a safe and supportive space for growth and connection through music.
-
Supporting social engagement, focus, and self-expression.
-
Offering a safe space to explore emotions and build resilience.
-
Using music to support sensory integration, motor skills, and developmental milestones.
-
Enhancing communication through vocal exercises, singing, and non-verbal musical interactions.
-
Helping to build coping skills, emotional awareness, and positive behaviours.
-
We offer a safe, supportive space for children and families processing significant life events such as adoption or bereavement. Music therapy supports emotional expression, identity, attachment, and the exploration of complex feelings through creative musical relationships.
What Happens in a Music Therapy Session?
Sessions are tailored to each client’s comfort level and preferences, allowing them to guide their own therapeutic journey. No prior musical experience is required - clients are encouraged to engage as actively or passively as they feel comfortable.
-
Creating spontaneous music together allows for a “musical conversation” that fosters connection, creativity, and emotional expression without the need for words. This approach encourages clients to explore feelings in a supportive setting and helps build trust and connection.
-
Singing familiar songs or creating new melodies supports emotional release, verbal expression, and mood elevation. For those experiencing intense emotions, singing can provide a structured way to process feelings and foster a sense of calm.
-
Using instruments like djembes, tambourines, or xylophones helps develop coordination, impulse control, and focus. Drumming offers a powerful outlet for releasing energy and exploring rhythm, while enhancing motor skills in a fun, engaging way.
-
Writing original songs or adapting lyrics allows clients to creatively process personal experiences. Lyric analysis involves examining song lyrics that resonate with the client’s emotions or experiences, encouraging meaningful reflection and discussion. This technique provides a safe space to explore thoughts and feelings through music - building insight and coping skills.
-
Focused listening to music invites clients to connect with sounds and lyrics that evoke emotions, memories, or reflections. This practice fosters relaxation, enhances mood, and helps clients access inner experiences in a structured, therapeutic way.
Service Options
At Music Therapy Birmingham, we offer a range of service options designed to meet each child where they are — whether that’s in our dedicated Harborne studio, at home, or in a familiar community setting. All sessions are built around your child’s unique needs and goals, offering safe, engaging, and meaningful therapeutic experiences.
Individual Sessions at Our Harborne Studio
Our primary service is individual music therapy sessions at our Harborne music studio. These one-on-one sessions are crafted to meet each client’s unique goals, creating a supportive environment for self-expression, emotional exploration, and skill development.
Please note: Our Harborne studio does not have step-free access.
Sessions in Home or Community Settings
We offer in-home sessions or therapy within familiar community settings for clients who may feel more comfortable in their own environment. For sessions conducted outside of our studio, a mileage fee may apply based on distance from our Harborne location.
Group Sessions (Limited Availability)
Group sessions may be available periodically when there are children with similar goals, needs, and abilities. Some children may respond particularly well to group-based work, while others benefit more from individual sessions — we’ll always explore what’s most appropriate for your child.
